Is it possible to learn English after 60 or 70?
Absolutely. Age is no barrier to learning a language. Seniors even have advantages younger learners don’t have: patience, motivation and a genuine desire to learn. Our English lessons for seniors are designed to adapt to each person’s pace, whatever their age or starting level.
Do I need a basic level of English to take English lessons for seniors?
No. We welcome complete beginners, people who have forgotten everything since school, and seniors who already have some basics but lack confidence when speaking. Your teacher assesses your level during the first free lesson and builds your programme to fit you.

How our English lessons are designed for seniors
How is the BIE method different from a traditional English lesson for seniors?
The Break Into English method is built on real-time spoken conversation — no e-learning, no written exercises to fill in, no memorising word lists. For a senior, that means you speak from the very first minute of the session. Your teacher guides the conversation, naturally corrects your mistakes without breaking the flow, and chooses topics that genuinely interest you. No marks, no stressful assessment — just exchange and progress.
How do native teachers adapt specifically to senior learners?
All our teachers are trained in-house in the BIE method, which explicitly includes adapting to the learner’s profile. With a senior, the teacher adopts a calmer speaking pace, articulates clearly, focuses on everyday and senior-relevant vocabulary (travel, health, family, culture) and allows more time for reflection before correcting. They don’t try to speed up to get through a syllabus: they adjust to your energy on the day, to your concentration, and tune the length and intensity of the session accordingly.
How are sessions structured to avoid cognitive fatigue in seniors?
We offer sessions of 30, 45 or 60 minutes — your choice. For seniors, the 30- or 45-minute format is often ideal: long enough to make progress, short enough to stay focused and leave the session feeling fresh rather than exhausted. The teacher alternates between different types of activities — free conversation, work on an article, themed vocabulary, role play — to keep attention high without overloading working memory.
Why is one-to-one particularly well suited to seniors?
In a group, a senior has to fit in with everyone else’s pace, may fear being judged by their peers, and only gets a few minutes of speaking time per session. In a one-to-one private lesson, 100% of the speaking time belongs to them. They move at their own pace, without competition, without comparison. The teacher can correct immediately, explain as many times as needed, and adapt the content on the spot. It’s the most effective form of learning for seniors, because it respects both their cognitive rhythm and their self-esteem.
Is the lesson content really tailored to seniors’ interests?
Yes, it’s a priority at BIE. From the very first session, your teacher identifies your interests: travel, history, cinema, gardening, food and wine, international news, family, health and so on. The following sessions build on these subjects. You don’t discuss teen topics or business matters that aren’t relevant to you. You learn English in contexts you live in or dream of living in, which strengthens motivation and memory.
Do seniors really make progress with this method, even after a long break from English?
Yes — and often faster than they imagine. Over the years, seniors have developed a capacity for concentration, patience and rigour that younger learners don’t always have. With a conversational one-to-one method, speaking progress is visible within the first few weeks: fluency comes back, confidence grows and comprehension improves naturally. Many of our senior students travel to English-speaking countries a few months after starting and tell us they dared to speak for the very first time.
