Online English course for IT professionals with a native teacher

The Break Into English course for IT professionals is taught one-to-one over video, with a native teacher you keep from start to finish. It starts from your role and your real situations: a ticket to write, a call with a team in another time zone, a demo to present.

English is the working language of tech: documentation, error messages, tools like Jira, GitHub, and Slack, and conversations with international clients and colleagues. Reading technical English is not enough. You also need to speak it in meetings.

That is why the classes focus on speaking. You do most of the talking, and your teacher corrects what matters in your job.

The Break Into English method

How the IT English classes work

Classes follow a dynamic method focused on speaking and listening. Your teacher combines several activities based on your goal and, if useful, uses our General English and Business English textbooks.

  • Oral presentations

You prepare a work topic, such as a feature or an incident, and present it to your teacher.

  • Listening activity

You summarize a short audio clip, then summarize it again using the new vocabulary.

  • Picture description

You describe a diagram or a screenshot, then describe it again using 3 to 7 new words.

  • Grammar in practice

Grammar is practiced out loud, based on your own mistakes, with no fill-in-the-blank drills.

Sample 45-minute class

10 min · Your stand-up

You present your week as you would in a daily stand-up.

15 min · Listening and summary

You work on comprehension and vocabulary with an audio clip.

20 min · Role-play

You act out a code review or a client call with your teacher, then go over your mistakes.

IT English course length and schedule

Course length depends on your starting level and your goal. To make fast progress, we recommend at least 2 hours of class per week, with a little practice between classes.

Classes last 30, 45, or 60 minutes and are booked in packs of 5 to 40 sessions.

Classes run 7 days a week and can be canceled for free up to 6 hours before, so you can plan them around sprints, releases, and on-call shifts.

English for software developers and tech professionals

The course is for every IT role that works in English, in writing and out loud.

Software developers

Stand-ups, code reviews, pull requests, documentation, and discussions on GitHub or Slack.

SysAdmins, network and security engineers

Report an incident, explain an outage, read a security alert, and brief your team.

Project managers, POs, and scrum masters

Run agile ceremonies, negotiate a deadline, and update a client on progress.

Support, data, and IT leadership

Help a customer, present an analysis, or manage a vendor or an offshore team.

English level needed in IT, by role

The CEFR measures language level in 6 steps, from A1 to C2. Here are benchmarks by role, with the TOEIC Listening & Reading score that matches each level according to ETS.

RoleRecommended CEFR levelTOEIC score (out of 990)
IT support, help deskB1From 550
SysAdmin, network engineerB1 to B2550 to 785
Software developer on an international teamB2From 785
Project manager, PO, scrum masterB2 to C1785 to 945
Tech lead, architect, IT directorC1From 945

B2 is a common requirement in tech job postings with an international scope. The TOEIC does not measure C2.

IT English course content

Your teacher builds each class around your role and your tools. Every situation is practiced out loud and in writing.

  1. Agile meetings and stand-ups

Say what you did, what you will do, and what is blocking you, then take part in sprint reviews and retrospectives.

  2. Tickets, bugs, and incident reports

Describe a bug, write a clear ticket, report an incident, and write a postmortem.

  3. Code reviews and pull requests

Comment on a colleague’s code tactfully, justify a technical choice, and respond to feedback.

  4. Technical documentation and READMEs

Understand documentation and write a README, a spec, or a clear commit message.

  5. Architecture presentations and client demos

Present a solution, explain a stack choice, and answer client questions.

  6. Technical job interviews in English

Present your background, walk through a project, and answer behavioral questions.

I've had a wonderful experience learning English at this school! The program is well-structured, engaging, and truly helps you improve naturally and confidently. All the teachers are highly professional and supportive, always creating a welcoming and motivating atmosphere. I want to give special thanks to Gabu Ithier – she is an outstanding teacher! Her energy, patience, and ability to explain even the most complex things in a clear and fun way made every class a joy. I’m incredibly grateful for the progress I’ve made with her help. Thank you to the entire team – I’m so glad I chose this school!
