English for accounting

Online accounting English course with a native teacher

The Break Into English course for accountants is taught one-to-one over video, with a native teacher you keep from start to finish. It starts from your job and your real situations: a reporting pack due at a US parent company, a UK subsidiary to consolidate, a client asking why an invoice changed.

In accounting, English is both written and spoken: reading financial statements prepared under IFRS or US GAAP, writing a clear email to a supplier, and explaining a treatment during an audit. You need the exact term, not an approximation.

That is why the classes start from your own documents and figures: you do most of the talking and your teacher corrects what matters in your job. To review the basics, read our guide to accounting vocabulary in English.

The Break Into English method

How the accounting English classes work

Classes follow a dynamic method focused on speaking and listening. Your teacher combines several activities based on your goal and, if useful, uses our General English and Business English textbooks.

  • Oral presentations

You prepare a presentation of a close, a reporting pack, or your team and present it to your teacher.

  • Listening activity

You summarize a short audio clip, then summarize it again using the new vocabulary, and get used to different accents.

  • Picture description

You comment on a chart or a table, then comment on it again using 3 to 7 new words.

  • Grammar in practice

Grammar is practiced out loud, based on your own mistakes, with no fill-in-the-blank drills.

Sample 45-minute class

10 min · Your reporting

You comment on the monthly figures as you would for the group controller.

15 min · Listening and summary

You work on comprehension and vocabulary with an audio clip.

20 min · Role-play

You answer questions from an auditor played by your teacher, then go over your mistakes.

Course length and schedule around month-end close

Course length depends on your starting level and your goal. To make fast progress, we recommend at least 2 hours of class per week, with a little practice between classes.

Classes last 30, 45, or 60 minutes and are booked in packs of 5 to 40 sessions.

Classes run 7 days a week and can be canceled for free up to 6 hours before, so you can slow down during close or tax season and pick up the pace afterwards.

English for accounting professionals, by role

The course adapts to your role and to the people you work with.

Accountants and bookkeepers

Process supplier invoices, chase a payment, and explain an entry to a foreign colleague.

Accounting firms

Advise an English-speaking client, explain their filing obligations, and present year-end accounts.

Controllers and group reporting

Send a reporting pack to the group, comment on variances, and prepare a consolidation.

Auditors

Run an audit meeting, request supporting documents, and present findings and recommendations.

English level needed in accounting, by role

The CEFR measures language level in 6 steps, from A1 to C2. Here are benchmarks by role, with the TOEIC Listening & Reading score that matches each level according to ETS.

RoleRecommended CEFR levelTOEIC score (out of 990)
Accounts payable or receivable clerkA2 to B1225 to 550
Staff accountant, bookkeeperB1From 550
Accountant in an international group, controllerB2From 785
Head of accounting, auditor, CFOB2 to C1785 to 945

B2 is a common requirement for accounting roles in international groups. The TOEIC does not measure C2.

English for accounting course content

Your teacher builds each class around your role. Every situation is practiced in role-play, out loud and in writing.

  1. Introducing your role and team

Describe your job, how the accounting team works, and how you work with purchasing, management, and audit.

  2. Day-to-day transactions

Explain an invoice, a bank reconciliation, an accrual, or depreciation to an English-speaking colleague.

  3. Month-end close and reporting

Post adjusting entries, close the books with a foreign group, and explain variances.

  4. Reading financial statements

Read a balance sheet and an income statement in English and explain year-on-year changes.

  5. Audit meetings

Answer an auditor’s questions, justify a treatment, and ask for clarification.

  6. Resume and job interview

Describe your experience with the right accounting terms and prepare for an interview in English.

I've had a wonderful experience learning English at this school! The program is well-structured, engaging, and truly helps you improve naturally and confidently. All the teachers are highly professional and supportive, always creating a welcoming and motivating atmosphere. I want to give special thanks to Gabu Ithier – she is an outstanding teacher! Her energy, patience, and ability to explain even the most complex things in a clear and fun way made every class a joy. I’m incredibly grateful for the progress I’ve made with her help. Thank you to the entire team – I’m so glad I chose this school!
