Regular Plurals (+ s)

Most nouns in English follow a simple pattern to form the plural. If you want to learn more common nouns, check out our list of nouns in English.

Rule: Add -s to most nouns

Nouns Ending in s, x, z, ch, sh (+ es)

Rule: Add -es to nouns ending in s, x, z, ch, or sh

Nouns Ending in Consonant + y (y → ies)

Rule: When a noun ends in consonant + y, change y to ies

Nouns Ending in Vowel + y (+ s)

Rule: When a noun ends in vowel + y, simply add -s

Nouns Ending in f or fe (f/fe → ves)

Rule: For many nouns ending in f or fe, change to ves

Nouns Ending in o

Rule: Some add -es, others add -s (no clear rule)
