Logical connectors in English articulate your ideas and structure your discourse by expressing addition, contrast, cause, consequence or condition
Each connector has a specific position in the sentence: some are placed at the beginning (however, therefore), others in the middle (also, nevertheless)
Mastering connectors allows you to move from basic English to a fluent and professional level, essential for TOEFL and IELTS exams
Logical connectors and linking words in English are the joints that allow you to link your sentences and articulate your thoughts. They transform a succession of short sentences into a fluid and coherent discourse, while clarifying the relationships between your ideas.
Why logical connectors are essential
When you start learning English, you build simple sentences like “I like coffee”. The next step is to connect this sentence to another: “I like coffee and I like tea”. The word “and” is a connector, and it’s one of the first you learn.
Connectors allow you to significantly improve your conversational and written English. They add cohesion to your text, clarify the relationships between your ideas, and demonstrate an advanced level of language mastery. In a professional or academic context, knowing how to use the right connectors makes all the difference.
The different types of logical connectors
There are several categories of connectors according to the function they fulfill in your sentence. Each type expresses a different logical relationship between your ideas.
Addition connectors
These connectors allow you to add information or a sentence to another. The most common is “and”, while the others add more emphasis and are frequent in written English.

Position of connectors in the sentence
The position of a logical connector in the sentence influences the style and sometimes the meaning of your message. Some connectors are flexible, others have a fixed position.
Coordinating connectors (and, but, or, so, yet) always go between the two elements they link. Subordinating connectors (because, although, while, since, unless) introduce a subordinate clause and can be placed at the beginning or middle of the sentence.
Adverbial connectors (however, therefore, moreover, nevertheless) are generally placed at the beginning of a sentence for more emphasis, but can also appear in the middle. In formal writing, they are often preceded by a period or semicolon.
Use in professional context
In the working world, mastering logical connectors is crucial for effective communication. During presentations, use “firstly”, “secondly”, “finally” to structure your discourse. In your professional emails, “however”, “therefore” and “moreover” add clarity and professionalism.
To argue during a meeting, contrast connectors (however, nevertheless, on the other hand) allow you to present different points of view. Cause connectors (because, due to, since) justify your decisions, while consequence connectors (therefore, consequently, as a result) highlight expected results.
Common mistakes to avoid
Here are the three most frequent errors with logical connectors in English.
Confusing “because” and “because of”: “because” is followed by a clause (subject + verb), while “because of” is followed by a noun (❌ because of he was late → ✓ because he was late / ✓ because of the traffic)
Incorrect punctuation with adverbial connectors: “however”, “therefore”, “moreover” must be preceded by a period or semicolon, not a comma alone (❌ It’s expensive, however it’s good → ✓ It’s expensive. However, it’s good)
Using “though” and “although” interchangeably: “though” can end a sentence, “although” cannot (✓ She came, though → ❌ She came, although)
Correlative connectors
These connectors work in pairs and link similar grammatical elements. They add structure and emphasis to your discourse.
